Postcard Friendship Friday

I wasn't to sure what this card was about, the meaning of a pat hand was lost to me until I looked it up , and it's a term used in poker meaning the winning hand.

This is the back. Makes you wonder if Bufflo Bill thought he might have a "winning hand" with the Miss (whose name I can't read!), I love to speculate!

Remember to go check out The Best Hearts Are Crunchy for a list of others linked up to PFF.

Anyhow, Cheers and have a superb Friday!

Bathroom Makeover, on the thrift!

I've lived in my little town house for over 6 years now, it seem like a long time, but it has flown by really. Now these places were built about 28 years ago, and for the most part they still had all the original floors and the walls were Antique White when I moved in. So far we now have laminate floors in the bedrooms, and I've painted some of the rooms, but because of my schedule and having a daycare in my home, not much else has had a chance to get done.

The bathroom has been on the list for a makeover for a while, and about 3 years ago, I picked out a paint I loved and thought would be perfect, of course that is if I got the floor replaced (it is a mustard yellow, and I say it is because thus far, we still have it!). 2 years ago, I ripped out the baseboards, in anticipation of painting the bathroom that summer. A year ago, I bought a new over the toilet cabinet in a nice dark Walnut colour from "Linens and Things" before it went under, and a really cool damask vinyl tattoo for my toilet tank and vinyl decor for my mirror from Janey Mac Press on Etsy. (we got a new toilet last summer too!)

I really liked the look of the mirror, but I think it really needed a frame to give it a more modern look.

Notice a trend here.... everything takes me about a year to get to.... Last month I finally painted in there (just so you know, there are still a couple spots I couldn't reach and might not get done until next year, because that's just how I roll!!) It is a very subtle blue/green, perfect for a bit of an ocean theme... not the trendiest of colours, but at least it's not antique white anymore....

I also got this wonderful bunch of goodies, for $4 at the local thrift store. A metal shelf, a metal milk/flower jug and a ornate picture frame.

I also got some trim from Rona (not in the picture but was $14 total), which I had David's dad cut for me. I was going to use Tremclad, however I was not happy with the colours avaialble, so I chose my new favourite, KRYLON, in a nice dark brown called leather brown, remeniscent of a tasty Hershey's chocolate bar, and away I went. I really do love Krylon because not only is it cheaper than Tremclad, you can paint plastic, wood, metal and wicker among other things with it and it dries in 10 minutes! Imagine that?!

I spray painted then, attached the trim with velcro. That is, so if I ever move, I can return the bathroom to it's original state, not that anyone in their right mind would want it back to that!!

Even though up close you can see a tiny bit of the velcro in the mirror, it's only slight and only if you are actually looking for it, so I'm happy with the results! If you don't want to do it yourself for a few dollars, you can have a custom made frame from Mirror Mate, though they were a bit pricey for me.

I'm happy with it, specially that the whole bathroom now looks together, ignore the 7 toothbrushes and piles of towels on the rack.... I said together, not perfect, haha!

Ok, as soon as it's nice out....my blogging goes out the window!

I was just on facebook, you know the place, where you go in to put your update and get sucked in for 2 hours reading everyone's posts, links and comments...I'm glad I did today 'cause Inner Hooker's Blog Roll reminded me I better get my but in gear and get posting something on my blog.

Anyhow, I thought I'd share my little story about The Silver Surfer and some sewing I finally did, with my new machine of course!

A couple weeks ago, my son hauled this huge vacuum cleaner box from the basement and asked me to cut out a surfboard from it. I asked why and he told me he wanted it for his secret identity, OK! So we cut it out and me and the kids helped him paint it silver. When we were done, he looked at me with those big brown eyes and asked "Mom, can we paint some of my clothes silver?" NOPE. I had something better. A few days before this, I had been at WalMart and bought some silver fabric from the 1.98 bin, I figures with kids and my dayhome, you just never know when you might need silver fabric, lucky for my son he has a mom with a sixth sense (my creative sense I think). I took a pair of pajamas and used them as my template to cut out the outfit. I even figures out how to get a hood on the thing.

He wore it for two whole days, even wore it to school under his clothes. When the teacher asked "What is that under your jersey, David?"
"My secret identity" was his reply.

Definitely the Rise of The Silver Surfer is the best costume thus far.

He mentioned last night, just before he closed his eyes, that maybe ?I should make him a Calvin and Hobbes costume too. I told him that it was easy, because Calvin just wears normal clothes, but he said "What about your costume?"... I'm the Mother, I don't need a costume either. "You need a tiger costume if you're gonna be Hobbes" he said. Well, I guess I better get looking for more fabric then!

Cheers and Happy Monday,

Margarita Bean Salad

I've been looking for a bean salad recipe that is simple and easy to pull together and be tasty without the crazy calories (and without corn!!) So, I came up with this, it tastes incredible good and it's perfect for a summer BBQ with very little effort.

Ingredients

2 cans of mixed beans drained and rinsed to reduce sodium
3 cups of fresh tomatoes chopped
1 small onion chopped
1 small green pepper chopped
1 jalapeno (optional) minced
1 cup chopped cilantro
1/4 cup lime juice
1 tablespoon of cumin
2 garlic cloves minced or crushed
salt and pepper to taste

Just mix all the ingredients together in a big bowl and let them marinate for a couple hours so that the flavours blend in well. This makes a really great meal salad (2 cups= 4 Weight Watchers points), or a side salad to fajitas or other latino foods.

Approximately 140 calories per cup, or 2 Weight Watchers points per cup.

Enjoy!

I'm Back For PFF!!

I think this Post card is lovely! I love the layout design on the front. Now it is not dated nor mailed, the writer Rebecca, says she had the card so she is sending it along (with a package maybe?). I am guessing her their friend must have just moved into a new house maybe? and much bigger but she will apparently do the housekeeping herself (thirfty, my type of lady!), I'm also guessing the writer has given the recipient the address in case she hasn't been there. I think it's cute that she had a kitchen shower, I'm guessing a party of sorts, like a house warming...any guesses here?

Happy Postcard Friendship Friday. Remember to check The Best Hearts are Crunchy, for a list of who else is participating today.

Cheers,
Viviana

p.s.
I have to apologize, I have been soooo busy for this past week, and haven't had the time to be on the computer much. I have tried to read some of my favourite blogs, but that's about it. It had been so gloomy too, that all I did have to talk about was how this spring has been horribly cold and depressing, so it's best not to write at length about such things, right?

Did I Tell You I Love Roses? PFF!

Isn't it gorgeous? It's embossed with gold and it looks brand new! The front says it's copyrighted only 1912 by Heymann...that's the most information I've ever seen on a postcard so far. I tried to find more information on the artist and all I found was her postcards for auction or sale. Oh well, if anyone else knows anything, let me know.

The message the back is rather intriguing though. It's addresses to a Miss Ida Cuyle in Roseve, Nebraska, March, 1913. "I found the peace about the president of the United States. I can't say all of it now. I have said to the teacher. Lovely Raymond." Woodrow Wilson had just become president, so I wonder what the writer had to say about him. It may have been too much to write on such a small postcard or maybe he didn't want the whole world to read it. Whatever it was. it is a lovely postcard.
